What is a Dental Prosthetic?

Let’s start with the prosthetics dental definition. It is an artificial device designed to replace your missing or damaged teeth. These prosthetics are customized to fit your mouth perfectly and restore functionality and beauty. The dental prosthetic technology helps in chewing and speaking and also plays a role in maintaining the structure of your face and jaw.

Are Dental Implants Considered Prosthetics?

Yes, dental implants are considered prosthetics because dental implant prosthetics replace missing teeth and restore both functionality and aesthetics to your smile.

Dental Prosthetics Types

There are several types, each serving different purposes:

Fixed Dental Prosthetics

  • Bridges: They replace one or more missing teeth by anchoring to adjacent teeth.
  • Crowns: They are caps placed over your damaged teeth to restore their size, shape, and power.
  • Implants: These are Titanium posts. They are placed into the jawbone surgically to serve as a permanent base for artificial teeth.

Removable Dental Prosthetics

  • Dentures: They are removable full or partial sets of teeth that can replace multiple missing teeth.

Cosmetic Dental Prosthetics

  • Veneers: These thin shells can cover the front surface of teeth to improve their appearance.

So like many (or maybe it’s just me) the dentist is always hard to go to because I don’t like needles. But I will say my experience from being greeted walking through the door to meeting my doctor and my service was one that has changed my perspective and I might have found a new home dental care. I went in through a suggestion from a friend and I am SO SO THANKFUL Dr. Ermias Mehretab. Everything thing he did he greeted me, explained what we were going to do next, and honestly I HATE needles but he truly had a soft touch and it felt effortless but allowed me to relax a lot more. Also his dental assistant for my time, Maria kept checking on me and brought me water and explained all to me before I left payment wise. Just great Overall great experince, love it and will be going back!

What are Dental Prosthetics Made Of?

Different types are made from various materials:

  • Dental dentures are made of acrylic resin and are sometimes combined with metal.
  • Bridges and crowns are crafted from porcelain fused to metal, all-ceramic, or all-metal.
  • The posts of implants are made of Titanium with crowns typically made from porcelain or zirconia.
  • Veneers are crafted from porcelain or composite resin.

Dental Prosthetics Procedure Steps

At Desert Lake Dental, our dental prosthetics procedure includes several key steps:

  1. Initially, we evaluate your dental health and discuss your specific needs and options. This assessment helps us plan a personalized treatment just for you.
  2. We take precise images of your teeth and gums to ensure a custom fit for your prosthetic. These accurate measurements will result in better fit, comfort, and functionality.
  3. For certain prosthetics, such as crowns and bridges, we may need to reshape the nearby teeth to accommodate the new prosthetic and ensure a perfect fit.
  4. Based on the impressions and measurements, we make your custom prosthetics in a specialized dental lab. A lab work ensures that your prosthetics meet the highest standards of quality and accuracy.
  5. Once the prosthetic is ready, we fit it in your mouth and make any necessary adjustments to ensure comfort and proper function.
  6. Finally, we permanently place the prosthetic. For removable options, we provide detailed aftercare instructions to help you maintain and clean your new prosthetic.
