Who Should Schedule a Dental Cleaning and Exam?

Most people do well with a visit twice a year, but a few situations make it worth booking sooner. Here’s what we look at when we see you:

It's Been Six Months or Longer

If more than six months have passed since your last routine dental exam, plaque and tartar have likely built up past what a toothbrush alone can remove.

Bleeding, Swelling, or Sensitive Gums

Gums that bleed when you brush or floss are often an early sign of gum disease, and catching it early keeps treatment simple.

First Visit or Returning After a Gap

Whether you're a new patient or coming back after time away, we start by getting a full picture of where your oral health stands today.

Kids and Adults, All Ages

We see patients of every age, from a child's first cleaning to routine recall visits for long-time adult patients.

Issues a Comprehensive Dental Exam and Cleaning Can Catch

A routine visit often catches small issues before they grow into bigger ones. Here’s what we typically watch for.

Plaque and Tartar Buildup

Professional cleaning removes hardened tartar that brushing and flossing at home can't reach on their own.

Early Signs of Gum Disease

A gum evaluation during your exam can flag early gingivitis before it progresses into something harder to treat.

Cavities in Their Early Stages

Digital X-rays and a close visual exam often catch a small cavity well before it starts to cause pain.

Oral Cancer Warning Signs

A screening checks your mouth, tongue, and throat for anything unusual that's worth a closer look.

Factors That Affect the Cost of a Dental Cleaning

Not Sure When You're Due?

Call us, and we'll help you figure out when your next visit should be.

Dental Exam and Cleaning Process: What to Expect?

Every visit follows a similar path, so you always know what’s coming next.

1

Health History and X-Rays

We update your medical and dental history and take digital X-rays if you're due for them.

2

Comprehensive Exam

The dentist checks your teeth, gums, bite, and jaw, and screens for anything that needs a closer look.

3

Professional Cleaning

A hygienist removes plaque and tartar, then polishes your teeth to a smooth, clean finish.

4

Fluoride or Additional Treatment

If it would help, we apply a fluoride treatment or flag areas that need further care.

5

Home-Care Plan

We walk through anything we found and how to care for your teeth until your next visit.

What We Offer for Ongoing Oral Health

Our regular dental exam and cleaning in Avondale are built around what your mouth actually needs:

Routine Dental Cleanings

We remove everyday plaque and tartar buildup with a standard cleaning designed for healthy gums.

Fluoride Treatment

For patients who could use extra protection, we apply a fluoride treatment to help strengthen enamel between visits.

Oral Cancer Screening

An oral cancer screening checks your mouth and throat for changes worth monitoring, as a standard part of every exam.

Digital X-Rays

Digital X-rays use low-radiation imaging to help us see between teeth and below the gumline where the eye can't.

Comfort Options for Anxious Patients

For patients who feel nervous about dental visits, we offer options to help you stay relaxed throughout.

At-Home Care Coaching

We show you brushing and flossing techniques suited to your mouth, so cleanings between visits go further.

Caring for Your Smile Between Visits

How you care for your teeth after your appointment, and in between, has a real effect on your results. Here’s what we recommend at each stage.

Cost, Insurance, and Financing

The dental exam and cleaning cost depends on whether X-rays are due, your insurance plan, and whether a deeper cleaning is recommended. We’ll go over the cost before any treatment begins.

Insurance Accepted

We accept most major insurance plans, including Cigna, MetLife, Aetna, Guardian, Principal, United Concordia Dental, and Delta Dental . Preventive visits like cleanings and exams can be covered, though we'll confirm your specific benefits.

Flexible Payment Options

If you don't have insurance, we offer Cherry and CareCredit financing for any additional treatment.

Dental Exam vs. Cleaning: What's the Difference?

What to Expect?

If we find you need a deeper cleaning or other treatment, we'll explain the reason and the cost clearly before moving forward.

Technology Behind a Thorough Exam

We use tools built for early detection, so small issues don’t go unnoticed during your dental exam and cleaning in Avondale.

Digital X-Rays for Early Detection

Digital imaging uses less radiation than older film X-rays and lets us spot decay and bone changes sooner.

Oral Cancer Screening Technology

We check soft tissue in your mouth and throat as a standard part of every comprehensive exam.

Comfort-First Technology

We adjust your cleaning approach, including gentler tools or a topical numbing gel, based on your comfort and sensitivity.

Sensitivity and What Affects Your Results

A dental office cleaning and exam is a routine, low-risk visit, but a few things are worth knowing upfront so nothing catches you off guard.

Temporary Tooth or Gum Sensitivity

Cold or sweet foods may feel more noticeable for a day or two after a cleaning, especially if it's been a while since your last visit.

Finding You Need a Deeper Cleaning

If we find early gum disease, we may recommend other treatments instead of a routine cleaning at that visit.

A Referral for Further Care

Occasionally, an exam finds something, such as a cavity or a cracked filling, that needs its own separate appointment to treat.

So like many (or maybe it’s just me) the dentist is always hard to go to because I don’t like needles. But I will say my experience from being greeted walking through the door to meeting my doctor and my service was one that has changed my perspective and I might have found a new home dental care. I went in through a suggestion from a friend and I am SO SO THANKFUL Dr. Ermias Mehretab. Everything thing he did he greeted me, explained what we were going to do next, and honestly I HATE needles but he truly had a soft touch and it felt effortless but allowed me to relax a lot more. Also his dental assistant for my time, Maria kept checking on me and brought me water and explained all to me before I left payment wise. Just great Overall great experince, love it and will be going back!

FAQs

What is dental cleaning?

It's a professional removal of plaque and tartar from your teeth, usually done twice a year to help prevent cavities and gum disease.

Your visit typically includes a health history update, a comprehensive exam of your teeth and gums, an oral cancer screening, digital X-rays when due, a professional cleaning, and a fluoride treatment if needed.

Most visits take about 45 minutes to an hour, though a first visit or one that includes several X-rays can take a bit longer.

Most patients do best with a visit every six months, though your dentist may recommend a shorter interval if you're being treated for gum disease.

A routine cleaning is generally comfortable, though gums that are already inflamed may feel tender for a day or two afterward.

Confirm this range with your front office before publishing, or soften to "Preventive visits are often covered at a high percentage under most plans. We'll confirm your specific benefits.

Plaque and tartar keep building up, small cavities can grow without symptoms, and early gum disease is harder to catch without a professional look.
